"There are those who say
animals are ours to use and exploit however
we might wish, with no ethical responsibility
toward them. And there are also those who say
that animals draw breath from the same source
as we do, and deserve our compassion and respect.
I fall into the second category, because I
want all beings to be treated with kindness,
and because I believe that until we human beings
expand our circle of compassion to include
all beings we will not ourselves be fully human.
I congratulate the Peace Walk for Animals for
upholding the spirit of caring and concern.
The time has come for us to cease cruelty toward
animals and align ourselves more fully with
an ethic of reverence for life."
