I
am so happy that you have gathered here today
to speak out for the dear wonderful animals
who, because they cannot speak for themselves,
are tortured in tests of cosmetics and household
products.
Many people believe this battle was
won years ago, but they are wrong. Although,
thanks to protests like yours here today,
several hundreds of companies no longer
test in old-fashioned, crude ways, on
animals, some still do. PETA has video
footage of a kitten sitting quietly,
her body shaking with convulsions, after
being doused with a chemical; a rabbit
whose tender skin has been eaten away
by a corrosive material; rats and mice
twitching in painful death throes after
huge amounts of soaps were forced into
their stomachs; and a dog cowering in
her small cage after being poisoned.
If we are to achieve a total end to
the use of animals in product tests,
we must continue our protests and ask
people to only buy from companies that
do not torture and kill animals.
Dozens of non-animal tests have been
developed that are cheaper, faster and
more accurate than the barbaric animal
tests, yet there are still industry holdouts,
including Proctor & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson,
and a few other giants who are cruel
beyond words.
We must fight these cruel industries
with our purses and wallets and with
demonstrations like this one, which awaken
other people to the animals' torture.
Each of you here today is a star to
the animals. Your brave, wonderful work
will reach far and wide, and inspire
others to speak out, too and to buy only
from kind companies. When someone asks
you, "What did you do, in your lifetime,
to help animals," you will be able
to answer them joyfully and without a
second thought, "I worked to stop
their pain!"
Thank you all very much. Good luck in
your work!
