「動物は、私たち人間のものだから、動物に対する道徳的な配慮なしに、利用や搾取をしてもかまわない」と言う人がいる。一方で「動物は、わたしたち人間と同じように生命を築きあげているのだから、哀れみを持ち、尊重すべきである」と言う人がいる。私は、すべての生き物に対し、愛情を持って接してほしいと願う。なぜなら、私たち人間が、すべての生き物へ憐れみの輪を広げるまで、私たちは真の人間であるとはいえないからだ。動物に対する配慮といたわりの精神を支持するPeace Walk for Animalsに祝辞を述べよう。さあ、動物への残酷な仕打ちの廃止を目指し、生命を尊重する倫理観を奮い立たたせ、皆で立ち上がる時がやって来たのだ。

"There are those who say animals are ours to use and exploit however we might wish, with no ethical responsibility toward them. And there are also those who say that animals draw breath from the same source as we do, and deserve our compassion and respect. I fall into the second category, because I want all beings to be treated with kindness, and because I believe that until we human beings expand our circle of compassion to include all beings we will not ourselves be fully human. I congratulate the Peace Walk for Animals for upholding the spirit of caring and concern. The time has come for us to cease cruelty toward animals and align ourselves more fully with an ethic of reverence for life."
